Returning for a third season in a row, the Lizards will continue to run two Porsche 911 GT3 RSR’s in the highly competitive GT 2 Class. Finishing second in their first season and third last year, the Lizards have the eyes on a Championship run with a star studded driver line up led by Johannes van Overbeek, Jon Fogarty, and Darren Law. The team also placed third in the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans. Since their start up year in 2003 Flying Lizard has a growing fan base and a strong association with RennWerks Motorsports.
The Flying Lizard No. 44 Porsche (Darren Law and Seth Neiman) finished fourth and the No. 45 Porsche (Johannes van Overbeek and Wolf Henzler) finished sixth in today’s Monterey Sports Car Championship at Laguna Seca. It was a frustrating day for the Flying Lizard team as they watched their hopes for a GT2 team and driver championship dashed just over one hour into the race when the No. 45 was hit by a prototype, requiring a 10-minute pit stop repair.
Flying Lizard Motorsports No. 45 and No. 44 Porsches finished 5th and 7th, respectively, in today’s 1000-mile Petit Le Mans endurance race. Eight of the 10 GT2 cars finished the race: quite an accomplishment in a contest of attrition like Petit. The Lizards still retain the drivers’ championship (Johannes van Overbeek is 4 points ahead of Jorg Bergmeister of Petersen White Lightning) but they are now second in the team championship (Risi Competizione now leads by six points).
The Flying Lizard No. 45 and No. 44 Porsches finished third and seventh, respectively, in today’s Labor Day Grand Prix of Mosport. It was another tough race for the Lizards, who watched the No. 45 car start from third, then rocket to first and hold the lead for two-thirds of the race with Marc Lieb at the wheel. But their hopes for a win were dashed when a flat tire and unscheduled pit stop set the No. 45 back far down in the field. Teammate Johannes van Overbeek, who is leading in the ALMS GT2 drivers’ championship, was able to battle back to finish third in class and set the fastest race lap of any GT2 Porsche. Sister car No. 44 finished seventh after a solid race by Seth Neiman and Lonnie Pechnik.
The Flying Lizard No. 45 and No. 44 Porsches are fifth and ninth, respectively, on the provisional grid for the Labor Day Grand Prix of Mosport. However, once the final grid is complete, the team anticipates that they will start from third and sixth positions. This is the result of three GT2 cars having to start from the rear of the grid because their drivers were unavailable for the practice sessions, which is required by IMSA regulations.
Today’s Generac 500 at Road America was a struggle for the Lizards, who hit problem after problem with both team Porsches in what became a slugfest of off-track excursions and yellows for the entire field. After many challenges for both crew and drivers, the team and crew together fought to finish in the points and keep a nine-point lead in both the ALMS GT2 driver and team championships.

Flying Lizard Motorsports further extended its lead in team and driver championship points with a third and eighth in class finish at today’s inaugural Utah Grand Prix. The 2 hour and 45 minute race on the new 4.5 mile road course at Miller Motorsports Park had only one caution and few technical problems across the field — seeming almost placid compared to the chaos of the previous race at Lime Rock on July 1.

The Flying Lizard Motorsports squad’s No. 45 and No. 44 Porsches had the second and fourth fastest times in GT2, respectively, at Lime Rock in today’s qualifying session. Wolf Henzler had the second fastest GT2 time in the No. 45 Porsche (53.660 on the 1.54 mile course). Teammate Lonnie Pechnik qualified the team’s No. 44 Porsche fourth in class, with a time of 53.886. The No. 45 Porsche did not pass post-qualification technical inspection because a rear-wing height exceeded IMSA specifications. As a result, the No. 45 will start from the rear of the ten-car GT2 pack.
